WANGANUI.

Dear Bee, December 14. After live weeks continual rain and howling wind we have at last got some settled weather, and for the first time our tennis courts looked really gay. The courts were in perfect order, and Airs. McNaughton dispensed afternoon tea. Amongst those present I noticed Mrs. Christie, white silk blouse, and black skirl, white Panama hat; Airs Barnicoat, black silk blouse and black skirt, hat en suite; Miss Fenwick (Dunedin), dark blue eoat and skirt, with cream hat swalicd with blue silk; Airs Blundell, green coat and skirt, hat to match; Miss i’-arnieoat, blaek voile; Aliases Griffiths, Lifferton, Fenwick, McDonnell (2), Messrs Harold Barnieoat, Whitcoiube, Stedman, Pownall, Dr. Barnard, and many others.

Pollards Opera Company paid us a flying visit last Aionday, when they produced “Toreador” for the first time in Wanganui. The piece was very well staged, and the dresses bright and attractive. Aliss Alice Pollard made a charming* boy when in the course of the piece she adopted a man's costume as a disguise. Mr. Aylmer, a new member of the company, made a decided bit, as a somewhat effeminate drawling Englishman who constantly affirmed “Everybody's awfully good to me.” The house was as usual well filled.

On Wednesday evening the Liedertafel gave their thirteenth concert.. The house was packed upstairs long before the time for opening. The items given by the Liedertafel were very well rendered, and the members offered their - audience

rn additional aitra< tioii in the singing of Alias Amy Murphy I Dunedin I, who sang aiming others Gounod's “Serenade” anil "Hush This- My Baby" .with exquisite taste anil feeding. Among the audience 1 noticed Dr. and Mrs Saunders, Mr and Mrs Campbell? Mr and Mrs’AVray l , Mrs Greig. Miss Richmond, Miss Rieehart, Mrs. Harper. The Hon. R. ,7. Seddon, the Hon. IT. Carroll, and Dr. Pomare, paid our town a visit this week in connection with Native La nils Court business. They were leceived on behalf of the Putiki Maoris by the chiefs of the tribe. Air Goffe acting as interpreter. Speeches were made by the Premier and Air. Carroil, andthe Premier left the same night for Palmerston.

Airs. Zander has just returned to " anganui. after an en joyable 10 months’ trip to England and Germany. Air. D. Stewart has also returned to cur town, after four years spent in America, where he has been studying engineering.

The Wanganui Amateur Swimming Club hold their sports at the Corporation baths this afternoon. They are fortunate in having perfect weather for them as the events are likely to be well contested.
