The news of the death of Mrs Horne, widow of the late Dr. Horne, waich took place suddenly on Saturday night, was a great shock to her family and numerous friends, for, though not in very good health, she had been more than usually bright and cheerful that evening. She died from heart failure about 20 minutes alter rousing her daughter, and though medical aid was almost at once at hand nothing could be done. Sue leaves a large family, all grown up, Mrs W. E. (Houston being her only married daughter. Last Friday evening Mr MeCaus- * land, of Belfast, Ireland, who has been spending a few weeks here, invited those from whom he had received hospitality to dine with him at ‘the Criterion Hotel. J. Conolly, Mr and Mrs J. Mowat, M.ss Leslie (Motueka), Miss Horton, Mi H. At the conclusion of the eu,.hre, the prizes were awarded to their respective winners, the first to M.’ss Powell (Westport) and Mr lx.ilme, the second to Miss Dora Redwood and Dr. Noonan. A delicious supper was laid in the dining room, and the table decorations of bronze and yellow chrysanthemums, with ant..uin leaves, looked lovely. Mrs Redman looked extremely well in black bioche, the square-cut bodice and elbow sleeves, bordered with a hand of embroidered gold, a front of glittering sequins; Mrs Collins wore black satin and Maltese lace: Mrs Ilnlvnc, black satin skirt and evening bodice of a lovely shade of blue, handsomely trimmed with lace; Mrs Grace, black and heliotrope; Mrs Vickers, b;ack satin dress, V-shaped bodice, ini fichu of silk Maltese lace; Mrs Carey, black dress; Miss Clark, black net; Miss Redwood, blue and white muslin; Miss Powell, black skirt, ami pretty bodice of green satin, trimmed wth lace; Miss J. Chaytor, black Skirt, and dainty bodice of white tucked silk, insertion bands crossing tl.e front V-shape. The gentlemen piesent were Messrs llulme. Gillies, Vickers, Bagge, Cyril Carey, E. Stace, and Drs. Noonan and Redman. 1 hear of few festivities for the winter, as Miss VVaddy has discontinued her assemblies this season, and the only dance talked of is the Volifnteer ball, spoken of a« the Coronation Ball, which will be held next month. j Mr J. Armstrong, who was, 1 be- / lieie, the last of the pioneers of Nelson, died yesterday at the resilience of his daughter, Mrs W. Gosling. He had attained the advanced age of 84, and until lately was often seen driving about. Dr. Guy Porter and his sister, Mrs Turnbull, of Nelson, have come to lite here for a time, and have taken a house near the school bridge. ' FRIDA.
