OUR ILLUSTRATIONS.
OPENING VP THE NORTH. The tong-delayed railway that is to connect Auckland with the. Far North, and open up that great tract of country, is creeping slowly forward. Among our illustrations this week is a series of views of the railway works at. Tahekeroa. fourteen miles north of Helensville. Progress is necessarily slow since the route presents considerable obstacles to the engineer in the matter of hills. At, present, extensive tunnelling operations are going on near Komokoriki, where the line will dive underground for a distance of 512 yards. Commenced in December last, the tunnel is now into the hill some 130 yards. TEMPI.E OF THE SACRED TOOTH. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth of Buddha, at ( indy. Ceylon, which was visited by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, is one of the most famous buildings in the world. The tooth is encased in a shrine, the keys of which are held by the highest dignitaries, and the exhibition of the tooth, which takes place once every few’ years, is a religious festival of the "most solemn description. The tooth has only been exhibited Im fore to great viceroys, a- representatives of the Empire's crown. The gates and approaches to the temple are surrounded by crowds of ghastly and deformed ('ripples, who display their malformations and solicit alms.
