His Excellency the Governor and Lady Ranfurly and suite have- returned to Wellington from Auckland, and have quite shaken down again at Government House. Alias Ethel Greensill and Miss Alabel Western, who have been holidaying in Dunedin for some time, returned to Picton on Saturday. School Inspector Smith, of Marlborough, had a funny experience while travelling from Cullensville to Alahakipawa. One wheel of the trap they were in went up a bank, and the inspector and the schoolmaster of Cullensville found themselves sitting Ly the roadside, the inspector’s feet firmly fixed in a box of horse feed, and the horse careering away down the road with the trap behind him. Neither of the occupants was hurt. Air James Fuller, of Picton. who has been storekeeping at Cullensville tor some years past, has parted with his business to two other Picton young men, who seem to think that storekeeping is the only quick way to fortune. Ere leaving Air Fuller was presented with a gold chain and some Alasonic tokens by the Cullensville miners. Air and Airs J. Alowat left Blenheim last Wednesday for Wellington, whence they intended to start for Sydney on Saturday. Airs R. W. Young, of “Dumgree,” Awatere, and her sister, Aliss Renwick, are staying for a month or two in Blenheim, having taken Airs Alclntire’s house for that time, whilst Airs Mclntire is visiting friends in the country. Aliss Ethel Carey left Blenheim last week for Wellington, where she will stay some time. Aliss Aubin, of Russell, is on a visit to Auckland. Aliss Fell (Picton) is leaving to-day to go to Wellington, to stay with Dr. and Airs Fell. Air Percy Redwood, son of Air T. Redwood, of “Blythefield,” left Blenheim last week with the intention of going to Queensland, where he intends to reside. His uncle, Air Charles Redwood, with his family, migrated two or three years ago. Mr C. W. Palmer, of the Government Lite Insurance in Wellington, has gone to Blenheim to relieve Air Ralph who is suffering from ill-health, and who will Visit Wellington hoping to receive benefit from the change. . llen ’ Stipendiary Alagistrate for Marlborough, was, on a recent visit to Havelock, congratulated bv the legal fraternity on attaining his majority as a magistrate for that district. Mr AlcNab, in a complimentary speech, hoped His Worship would dispense justice jfor many years yet. Captain Russell’s visit to Marlborough was not only for the purpose of showing the Opposition side of the picture, but also to endeavour to bring forward an Opposition candidate to oppose the sitting member at the next general election. “It never rains but it pours." and more trouble is in store for the Picton Borough Council. The father of a child which was kicked in the street by a borough licensed horse is bringing an action for damages against the city fathers, who make a trifle by licensing horses and cattle to run in the streets and get the grass cut down on the cheap at the same time. Airs H. C. Seymour, Aliss Alary Seymour, Airs Allen, and Air Riddell returned from Wellington on Wednesday. Airs and Aliss Seymour remained in Picton till Saturday, when they returned to Tyntesfield accompanied

by Mr Seymour, who came into Picton to meet them. Mr .1. H. Riddell. Pieton, is busy preparing Cam House for his marriage. The furniture and fittings were all purchased in Wellington, and are the best to be had. Mr Parry, who has been in the Bank of New South Wales for a number of years at Greymouth, has been removed to Wellington. Before leaving a farewell dance was given for him. and he was the recipient of a gold and opal ring, and was also presented with a purse of sovereigns from the different athletic clubs to which he belonged. , Mrs W. Thomas. Greymouia, has returned from her trip to Sydney.

Mrs Lockie, of Wellington, and Miss Ada Lockie are at present on a visit to Auckland, and are staying with Mrs J. Kirker, “Tara.” Ponsonbv.

Dr. De Clive Lowe, of Auckland, intends to give a series of Saturday afternoon lectures to ladies in connection with the St. John Ambulance Association in the northern city.

The Hon. W. Rolleston, accompanied by his wife and daughter, are in Wellington for the session. They have taken Mrs Palmer’s house opposite the Parliamentary Buildings.

Mr and Mrs G. E. Rhodes, of Claremont, Canterbury, passed through Wellington this week en route for Hawke’s Bay.

Mr and Miss Skerrett, of Wellington. have issued invitations for au “At Home" on the 3rd July in the Choral Hall. Wellington.

Mrs and Miss Lanauze (Christchurch) are the guests of Mrs Henry Beamish. Otamauri. Whaua Whaua.

Mr G. Hunter, M.H.R., has arrived in Wellington for the session, and is staying with Mr and Mrs W. Moorhouse at Knottingley.

Mr T. Morrison, chairman of the Parliamentary Press Gallery, arrived in Wellington in readiness for his arduous duties during the session.

Mr J. T. Gray, the popular captain of the Thorndon Swimming Club. Wellington, was recently presented with a framed photograph of the Executive of the Club, as a slight recognition of his untiring efforts in its interests, and in promoting swimming generally. The presentation took place at the Shamrock Hotel, where a very pleasant social and musical evening was spent. The president (Dr. Grace) spoke in eulogistic praise of Mr Gray’s good work for the club ever since his connection with it. and the pleasant little re-union terminated by hearty cheers being given for Mr and Mrs Gray.

Mr and Mrs E. W. Mills, of Wellington, are on a visit of some length to Auckland. .

Mr E. Jellicoe, the Wellington barrister, who has recently been so prominently before the public, has announced his intention of contesting a seat at the next general election as a true Liberal.

Captain Ward, A.D.C., is visiting Rotorua, and Captain Wellesley is spending a few days shooting in the Wairarapa.

The Premier celebrated his 54th birthday on the 22nd of this month, receiving very many good wishes for many happy returns of the day. The Hon. T. Thompson, Minister for Justice, left Wellington for Auckland on Thursday morning, having received news of the serious illness of Mrs Thopmson. The honorable gentleman will have the sympathy of a large number of friends extended to him over the sad cause of his departure.

Mr and Mrs James Mills, of Dunedin, left for a trip to Sydney last week.

Miss Fairchild (Wellington) is paying a visit to Mrs Kight, of Napier. Miss Douglas, daughter of Sir Arthur and Lady Douglas, Wellington, returned with Lord and Lady Ran-fu-rly to Wellington in the Tutanekai on Wednesday last, having been their guest at Government House, Auckland. for several weeks.

Mr Ronald Gard’ner (Christchurch) is staying with Dr. and Mrs Cleghorn, in Blenheim.

Miss Carrie and Miss B. Bayley have returned to New Plymouth after the pleasant six months* trip in Auckland. Mr Dalgleish, who has been for many years in the Lyttelton office of the Union Steamship Co., has been been transferred to Westport. Before leaving he was presented by the members of the staff in the Lyttelton office with a silver match box, suitably inscribed, and a silver mounted pipe. Mr and Mrs Dalgleish and family left by the Corinna on Monday, a large number of friends assembling on the wharf to wish them good-bye, and sending them off with Three hearty cheers. Sir George and Lady Clifford have been in Christchurch for the week, staying at Cambridge Terrace E. Mrs Lance and Mrs Northcote have been the guests of Mrs Wilson, Cashmere, for the week. The .Misses Wilder are paying Mrs George Gould a visit at Avonbank. Christchurch. Miss Fulton returned to Christchurch last week after a long and very pleasant visit to Dunedin. Mrs Meredith-Kaye gave a delightful little social evening on Friday at her residence, “Fassifern.” Papanui Road. Mrs George Gould had a gathering of her girl friends on Friday afternoon. amongst whom were the Misses Julius. Cowlishaw, Palmer, Beswick, Wynn-Williams, Murray - Aynsley, Williams. Wilson, Reeves. Ronalds. Tabart. Cook. Denniston, ete.
