MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS.

The monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Highland Society took place on the 4th inst. at the Foresters’ Hall, Napier. It was attended by a large company, including many country visitors, and the chief, Mr R. D. D. M’Lean, M.H.R., presided. After two new members (Sergeant-major Dewar and Mr W. S. Taylor) had been elected, and the usual routine business gone through, the remainder of the evening took the form of a social. Miss Nichol sang ‘Jock o’ Hazeldean ’ and ‘ Laddie Will you Lo’ me, ’ with her accustomed pathos and expression ; Mr T. M’Connell, sen., rendered ‘My Nannie's Gone Awa’ ’ with taste and feeling ; Messrs Campbell, Young, and T. Spence sang Gaelic songs, and Mr Rentoul recited a humorous Scotch story—the audience testifying their approval throughout by enthusiastic applause. A sheantreaus was danced by Mr W. P. Stuart, and in addition to the modern ones of the ball-room there were several pretty country dances.
