Dear Bee April 4. I could quote and feelingly a kingdom for some news, and I very much fear th*t even with Easter there will not be much improvement. We have always looked upon the present time as a season of meditation, and been accustomed to the early bellrir ging of all the surrounding churches, but always with the certain’y of an outbreak of some festivities at Easter. The shop-* at ai y rate are worth visiting, being resplendent with beaut ful and comfortab’e winter garments. and the most of one's friends are to be met in one or other, either turning the whole shop over and over, or refreshing themselves with a cup of tea after their efforts. The weather has been most favourable from the shopman’s po ; nt of view, setting in bitterly cold, a very white frost greeting us this morning. DEPARTURE. Mr and Mrs Clarkson left for England on Tuesday, whither Mr Clarkson is bound on business. Before leaving he was entertain* d at a luncheon by a number of gentlemen specially interested in grazing and agriculture, who presented him with a go’d Albert and sovereign case suitab'y inscribed, and at the same time handing him a handsome gold brooch for Mrs Clarkson, washing them both a pleasant journey ard speedy return. On Saturday Mrs Lomax-Smith had a most enjoyable evening for a few friends at her residence. * Linwood.’ introducing A NEW GAME. progressive dominoes. I doubt if it will become as popular as its predecessor, progressive euchre, but it is a change. Miss Buller (Wellington' is staying with Mrs Lomax Smith, and the other gnes’s included the Hon Mrs Parker. Mr and Mrs Wilder. Mrand Mrs A. Scott. Mrand Mrs G. Gould. Misses Hutton and Murray* Aynsley, and some others. OUR PEOPLE. The Hon E. W. Parker has paid a flying visit to Dunedin this week. Messrs I Gibbs. J J. Kinsey and o’hers took a few days early in the week for the opening of the shooting season but we hear of no very large bags from ary of the sportsmen. Mrs Watson, wife of the Rt v. H. C. M. Watson, and family are passengers by the Gothic due in Wellington in a few days We shall be glad to see them all back again after their prolonged absence. Nurse Knight, of the Christchurch Hospital, is leaving for Greymouth to take up a similar position there. Mrs Alister Clark has gone to stay with her sister. Mrs O’Rorke. at Onehunga before proceeding to her home in Melbourne. Mrs I Gibbs has gone to Timaru for a week. Mbs Lee. daughter of the Inspector of Schools for Wellington, is paying a visit to Miss Heywood. Armagh street West. For the Ashburton races last week a few Christchurch people made it. the occasion of an outing. Mr and Mrs P. Camobell, Miss Grigg. Miss Buckley, and a few more, but as Mrs G. M. Buckley gave a dance after the races, and the well-known hospPaity of Laghmor is a pleasant memory to a'good many it is not to be wondered at they sought so far a field for amusement. Mr F M. Wallace is progressing sati>factorily. and is staying st New Brighton for a week to gain strength prior to the next overhaul by the doctors. Dolly Vale.
