NELSON.

Dear Bee, October 10. The last, evening of the Girls’ Club for this season was held last Saturday at THE GIRLS’ COLLEGE, and like its predecessor, was an immense success. The feature of the evening was a charade acted by old College girls, and written by Mrs Ambrose Moore, of Nelson. The charade has already been criticised in the Graphic, so I will only speak of the general effect of the whole. It certainly gives plenty of scope for erood acting, and the girls who performed in the different scenes acquitted themselves admirably. The two last parts, or I ought to say acts, were the best. The first is too much of a scramble. (Inc cannot get from servants’ gowns into full evening dress in about two minutes, and yet that is about the time allotted, as the stage is left empty. However the audience fortunately, were not critical, and hcartilv’applauded the performers. The stage was very pretty. It had been most artistically arranged and draped, and great thanks are due to Miss Gibson for all the trouble she must have taken. The performers were Misses Fell (two). Me Eachen. Broad (two). Duncan, and Moore. Of course, being a girls’ club meeting, the gentlemen’s parts were taken by girls. Among the audience were Misses Gibson. Gribben. Watt. Higgins. Catlev. A. Bell. Cuthbertson. Heaps. Robison. Barnicoat. Harris. Rochfort, Webh-Bowen. Edwards. Mrs A. Monre. Mrs De (’astro, etc. During the intervals and at the end of the performance. Miss Gibson bold a spelling bee among the pupils, when t he prizes were won by Guy Learv and Eva McLean A pleasant evening was brought to a close by refreshments cut //b being handed round, which were much appreciated. There was a very successful SOCIAL AND DANCE held in the Provincial Hall on Wednesday evening in aid of St. Mary’s Organ Fund. The ball had been prettily draped with flags and greenery, and being a lovely night a great many were pre sent. The gem of the evening was (as is always the case when she si* gs) Mrs Howie’s solo. She sang as usual most, sweetly and sympathetically, and her rich voice seemed to till the whole hall. Others taking part were Mrs Roberts. Mrs Akers, Miss Scot, Miss Duff (two). Miss Broad. Mr Bain. Mr Sheridan. Mr Cordell and Dr. Duff. Among the audience were Dr. and Mrs Duff. Mr and Mrs Macouarrie. Mr and Mrs Burnes. Dr. and Mrs Roberts. MissGribben. Miss Leary. Miss Broad. Miss Porter (Gisborne), Miss Stevenson (Dunedin). Mrs Leary. Messrs Low (t wo). Levien. Toplins. Broad. Marshall, Maginnity. Colt. Shalerass. Howie, etc. During the evening refreshments were handed round.

A meeting was held last Monday night of all those interested in having a

KEGATTA IN NELSON this summer. There was a good attendance, (he Mayor being in the chair. After a great deal of discussing, etc., it was decided to hold a regatta on January Ist. Of course we are all very delighted, as last year there was no amusement during Christmas week at all, and it was therefore very quiet in Nelson. However, we all hope now that we shall have a.jolly time at

Phyllis.
