HASTINGS.

Dear Bee, August 27. We are still very quiet at Hastings. It is. by the way. rather a curiously situated place from a social point of view, there are the large runholders living all round the outskirts, but there are not enough peonle in the town itself to have any entertaining in a sociable way. However, some new families have lately settled here so we will look for bettor things. We had the great pleasure of hearing MISS BESSIE DOYLE again in Hastings last week. Her items were all well chosen and beautifully played as usual. Her simple manner has a great charm in these days nf stagey affectedness. She wore a very pretty dress of white silk with a gold coloured sash, and the front of the bodice covered with flowers, roses, violets and marguerites. She and her mother are riding up to Auckland. The weather being so settled they ought to have a most enjoyable time. THE ATHENJEUM LIBRARY is once more open, and we are all revelling in the fresh books, and it is astonishing how many have turned up of the old lot. which we have never seen. The new rules are to be strictly adhered to. so i hat subscribers will not be able to keep half a dozen books at home. Next week I shall be able to tell you about Lady Whitmore’s dance, which she and Mrs Dixon are giving in the Athenieum Hall in Napier. A number of Hastings people are going to it. OUR PEOPLE. Mrs Mellish and family (Christchurch) are staying at the Carleton. Mrs Von Dadelzcn is paying a visit to Mrs Beamish at Stoney croft. We are glad to learn Mrs Drummond is quite recovered from influenza. Miss Williams (Te Auto) is on a visit to Miss St Hill, Havelock. STREET DRESSES. Misw L.
