PICTON.

Dear Bee, August 21. On Thursday evening a sort of expected SURPRISE PARTY’ visited ‘Seaview.’ the residence of Dr. and Mrs Scott, and forthwith initiated a progressive euchre party The affair had really been ananged sometime before, but the promoters had postponed it on account of Mr Waddy’s death and out of consideration for his family. A really pretty procession walked up the broad gravel path of the terrace leading to ‘ Seaview.’ some of the party carrying blue lights, the illumination bringing the family and neighbours as well outside to look at the pretty scene. Six tables were soon in play, though, owing to Dr. Scott having a poisoned finger, he was unable to play, and ‘dummy’ had to take his place. That, however, did not damn the fun. which was immense all the evening. Miss Fell and Mr Rutherford being victors for the first prizes, and Miss K. Seymour won the ladies’ booby. Mrs Allen — who played for a gentleman—and Mr Fox tied for, the gentlemen's booby prize. The party had forgotten prizes, so the doctor’s surgery furni«hed them, and the result may be imagined. Mrs and Miss Scott were both in black: Miss Fell looked well in cardinal trimmed with black Maltese lace: Miss Sonhie Philnotts in black : Miss Mildred Fell, in pale blue with white Vandyke lace; Miss Duncan, dark skirt and pale blue silk blouse : Miss Mary Seymour, browm tweed skirt, red lustre blouse with white lace ; Miss Linton, black skirt red blouse; Miss K. Seymour, heather tweed costume: Mias Isabel Seymour, dark skirt, red blouse: Miss Evelyn Linton, dark skirt, pink blouse; Miss Mirrie Philpotts, black frock: Miss White, black ; Miss Ethel Greensill, green skirt, cream blouse; Miss Nora Allen, cream and dark red delaine frock : Mrs Allen, hlack. The gen’lemen were Dr. and Mr A. Scott, Messrs Rutherford. Fox. W. Duncan, J. Greensill, C White, and Andrews. Nearly everyone wore bouquets of purple and white violets, which have heen remarkably plentiful here all the winter. Many thanks are the due of Dr. and Mrs Scott, for receiving and entertaining the young people so delightfully.

A PICNIC TO LAUGHING BOB’S BAY was initiated for Friday. Mr Godwin, the chief officer of the ship Mataura, kindly offering the use of the ship’s boats. A fair number of young people took advantage of the offer, and a very merry time was spent at that favourite and sheltered spot for winter picnics. The young neople skipped, played rounders, and went out a-fishing. whilst the only chaperone, who could be induced to leave the comforts of a home fireside, looked on benignly from a nest of rugs and hampers. Those present were the Misses Seymour (three). Scott, Philpotts. Western (three*. Allen. Greensill. White. Mrs Allen, and Messrs Godwin, Fox, Scott. Western, and Dr. Millington. The same evening a gathering was held in the Anglican Sunday School-room for the purpose of

PRESENTING THE PRIZES gained by the children at the late Juvenile Industrial Exhibition. The school-room was crowded by prizetakers and their friends. The selection of prizes had been left in the hands of Me«dames Allen and H. C. Seymour, and the result was very satisfactory, all being apparently delighted with their prizes, w’hich included bonks, silver thimbles and brooches Japanese cabinets games, and china. Mrs Sedgwick was unanimous’y elected by the commit tee to present the prizes, and did so. amidst much applause. Mr Sedgwick explained to the children the object of exhibitions. Mr Philpotts, as Mayor of Picton and a member of the Industrial committee. urged upon them all to trv their strength with others, so as to gain an idea of their own shortcomings : and Mr Howard also addressed the children. Cake was handed round as consolation prizes, the prize-winners getting their share too. Among those present were Mesdames Philpotts. Sealy. H. C. Seymour. Fredericks. Allen. Jackson. Howard. Sedgwick. Bush, and Misses Sealy (Nelson). Duncan. Waddy (two), Sevmour. Allen. Sealy, Williams. Linton. Howard. Dart. Bragg. Miles. Craig. Wilson, Fuller, Philpotts. Price, Nickless. Greensill, Millington, etc., etc. PERSONAL. Mrs Smith, who has had a wonderful recovery from an operation for cancer, has returned to the Blenheim hospital for treatment under Dr Cleghorn, for a nervous complaint of longstanding. Dr. Cleghorn thinks that a treatment of massage for a few w’eeks will restore her nerves, which were weakened by rheumatic fever, to their pristine vigour. All Mrs Smith’s and Mrs Duncan’s friends- and they are legion—hope so. at any rate. Mr Gard, of Rougemont, has been recruiting his health after influenza in B'enheim. where he has been staying with his daughter. Mrs John Mowat. who. we all regret to hear, has been so seriously ill that a projected trip to Sydney has had to be postponed. Mr Gudgeon, postmaster of Picton. is still in a serious condition, hut has returned home to await the arrival of his brother. Major Gudgeon, of Auckland, Dr. Cleghorn wishing to consult him before risking an operation which may end fatally. The sympathies of all Picton are given to Mr and Mrs Gudgeon and their family of seven little children. The trouble is cancer caused by a

blow from a stone thirteen years ago.
