PALMERSTON SOUTH.

Dear Bee, October—. Never have we had such A GAY WINTER IN PALMERSTON. We are really getting quite dissipated. The many friends of Dr. and Mrs Hislop and Mr and Mrs R. S. Raymond were most hospitably entertained at a dance last Friday evening in the Town Hall which has seldom shown to more advantage, being artistically decorated with flags, mirrors, ferns, palms, etc. 'I he stage was arranged as a drawing-room with comfortable lounges and chairs for those who did not care to dance. The lower end of the hall was curtained off to form a supper-room ; it was also very prettily decorated. The supper-table looked lovely with its drapery of pale pink crinkled silk and bowls of spring flowers. The supper was delicious, every dainty one could think of being on Hie table. Fully forty guests were present, and Mrs R. S. Raymond and Mrs Hislop being perfect hostesses, all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The dance was given as A FAREWELL TO MR AND MRS R. NEVILL REID who are shortly leaving for Nelson. Now I must try to tell you something about, the dresses worn. Mrs R. S. Raymond wore a handsome gown of claret silk, the corsage being profusely trimmed with quantities of soft creamy lace : Miss Raymond, a dainty gown of white crOpon ; Mrs Walter Hislop, a very quaint and becoming gown of pale blue silk embroidered with pink rosebuds, full sleeves and folded belt of green velvet; Mrs R. Nevill Reid, very handsome gown of black merveilleux, vest and panel of old rose satin covered with black lace; Mrs J L. Bruce, stylish combination of black satin and lace : Mrs James Arkle. handsome gown of black brocade and dainty little cap of cream lace: Mrs A. Stuart. (Dunedin), stylish black silk gown relieved with white chiffon; Mrs John O. Mackenzie, very becoming gown of pale yellow broche, vest and panels of cream lace; Mrs A. Kilgour (Brooklands), very stylish gown of black silk with violets on the corsage ; Miss Horan, very handsome gown of black satin and lace relieved with scarlet poppies; Miss D. Horan, rich whitesilk gown, full sleeves of black velvet, and band of black velvet edging the skirt ■ Miss Coneys, stylish gown of black fisher net over black silk, spray’ of yellow daffodils on the corsage : Miss Arkle, wore one of the prettiest gowns in the room- -a tasteful combination of cream merveilleux and veiling ; Miss Macleod, very pretty gown of black grenadine, frills of pink chiffon on the bodice; Miss Kate Macleod, stylish and becoming gown of pink veiling; Miss Duff, becoming gown of vieux rose veiling ; Miss Dolly Murdock, stylish gown of black lace, spray of wild daisies on the bodice ; Miss Orbell (Waikoutiti). very pretty black lace gown, vest and panels of white satin. The gentlemen present were Messrs R. Nevill, Reid, John <> Mackenzie, R. Ewing, James Arkle. John E. Vernon, J. L. Bruce A Kilgour. J. Weir, J. Vcre Arkle, VV. Arkle. D. Macleod, VV Macleod, Hislop. R. M. Robertson, J. M. Emerson, A. Orbell, F. <l. Dalziel, A. Battsby, D. Stuart (Dunedin). The ANNUAL CONCERT in aid of the funds of the Palmerston High School camo offlast Wednesday evening. It was a great success, financially and otherwise. OUR PEOPLE. Dr. and Mrs Findlay are expected back about the end of November, after about a year s absence, during which they have lieon touring Great Britain, the Continent. America, and Asia. Judging from letters received by their friends they have had a most delightful time. , Mr Virtue Mr R. Nevill Reuls successor, has arn veil. Mr and Mrs Nevill Reid have loft the Bank and have taken rooms at the North Western Hotel. Palmerston is evidently going to become the SANATORIUM OF OTAGO. Quite a number of people come hero by doctors' advice. The only drawback is the want of accommodation. Mr and Mrs A. Isaacs,

of St. Clair, Dunedin, have taken rooms at the Empire Hotel for a few weeks. Several other Dunedin people talk of coming for the summer months if they could get houses or private lodgings. Ate.
