SOME MODERN IDEAS IN BRICK BUNGALOWS
No. 2 Rectangular in outline, with low walls and simple roof, this plan should appeal to those who wish to profit by a simple arrangement. Occupying the entire front of the house are the living and dining rooms, with French doors opening on to a porch, which extends the whole width of the house. An open brick fireplace, flanked on either side by a seat and a shallow bay, gives a charming aspect to the living room. Across the entrance hall is a den which may be used as a bedroom if so desired. The other bedrooms are corner rooms and connect with a sleeping porch. This plan could be improved by embodying the suggestions which apply to the plan of No. 1.
No. 1 Placed on the broadside of a road, this bungalow would present a very attractive appearance. Horizontal in line, it would fit admirably into the landscape and could be adapted to a flat section or a gently sloping site. The simplicity of its design suggests a simple treatment of the brickwork, and with correct planting of suitable shrubs a most pleasing effect would be attained. The smallest lot upon which it could be placed would be forty feet. You will notice that it has been planned so that the entrance and kitchen come in the middle of the sides, leaving the ends for the living rooms and bedrooms, where they will get the best light and air. If desired, the cellar could be dispensed with. This would enable the entrance hall to be widened, and by so placing the cloak room at the side, access could be obtained to the back hall without going through the living room. Also one door into the living room could be eliminated. In place of the cellar stair a fuel store could be embodied, access to which would be obtained from the back porch.
No. 3 Simple lines and masses constitute the design of No. 3, which needs only the charm that good brickwork can give to make it appeal strongly to the home lover. The plan is simple and inexpensive, and with a few minor alterations would make a most comfortable home for those who contemplate building a small house. The house could be built on a small section, and should be well planted with shrubs about the foundation.
No. 4 Here is a home that is reminiscent of the English cottage, and perfectly preserves the traditions of simple charm, dignity and comfort which we associate with this type. It illustrates the principle that well considered simplicity is the keynote of the best design. The living room is especially well situated to command the view toward the front, serving as the centre of the home’s activities, and still preserving a cosy privacy. The plan is similar to that of No. 3, but- allows for a stair to the attic. Bedrooms could be placed in the roof if so desired.
