Pigeon Poaching Causing Concern

The poaching of native pigeons is still causing grave concern, says the annual report of the Department of Internal Affairs. Several offenders were apprehended by field staff of the department in the Rotorua district, and it is hoped that substantial fines imposed by the courts will deter others. In the same district 77 prosecutions were taken for infringement against the Wildlife Act and 184 for breaches of the Fisheries Act, says the report; fines totalled £571 and £797 respectively. In the Southern Lakes district nine prosecutions under the Wildlife Act and 16 under the Fisheries Act resulted in fines totalling £37 and £5B respectively.
