SUMMER CAMP, POHARA BEACH DOMAIN, GOLDEN BAY Camp opens 8 p.m. Friday, 17 January, 1964, closes on evening of Thursday, 23rd. Meetings will be held in the adjacent social hall of the Golden Bay Cement Co. Pohara Beach, 6 miles from Takaka, is described as "a delightful seaside locality with a perfect bathing beach in picturesque surroundings". The camp will be the centre for the exploration of a district with an amazing variety of sightseeing attracions. Twenty different trips are listed in the Jaycee booklet mentioned below. Tasman National Park is only a short car trip away, and although this park will be visited during the camp it is probable that an after-camp trip of two days will be made in this area. At Pohara Domain are 45 army-type huts each with two single beds, mattresses, and electric point, but no pillows. Bring electric jug, etc. I have booked 20 of these huts but can book more if applications come early enough. Cost £3 per week. The huts are large enough to accommodate more if lilos are used, and tents can also be pitched alongside to suit families. There is plenty of room for tent campers and for caravans. Sites with use of facilities £2 I Os. per week. Amenities: Community kitchen with hot points and cookers, table, chairs, lockers, fridge, sinks, hot-water service and diningroom; flush toilets, hot showers, washing machine. Hotel accommodation at Takaka, 6 miles away. If interested make your own bookings, but register with me as attending camp. Hotels: the Junction (4-star), £2 per day; the Globe; and the Telegraph. Bus services: Newman's bus leaves Nelson at 8.45 a.m. arriving Takaka noon. Afternoon bus leaves Nelson 3.30 and arrives Takaka at 6.30 p.m. Book ahead to Newman's, Nelson, and check times. Taxis will probably be necessary, but probably can be shared. Reading list: "Vanguard of the South", by C. B. Brereton; "Old Tasman Bay", by the late J. D. Peart (a keen F. & B. member who attended a Waikaremoana camp); "High Noon for Coaches", by J. H. Miller; A brochure by Takaka Jaycees (I am trying to get copies for those registering). Camp fee will be low, probably I Os. single, IBs. families. There will be bus charges for outings for those without cars. Register with me but send no money; camp fees will be paid at camp. If you want a Forest and Bird sticker for your car send me Is. Stamped and addressed envelopes with applications and all enquiries please. North Islanders should make car bookings for the Aramoana early. BERNARD TEAGUE, Mahia Avenue, Wairoa, H.B. Camp Leader and Organiser.
