(bb) Tikitere Main. —The particulars that follow show the old work on the Okere side of the Ohau Channel, and both old and new work on the Tikitere side (i) Okere side : In grass, 198 acres ; rough pasture, 902 acres : total, 1 100 acres. Grassed paddocks and rough pasture on portions of the block which up to the 31st March, 1933, were in the former Taheke Scheme provided with the above grazing area for the 2,300 wethers and 260 bullocks. Fencing, 843 chains. . . (ii) Tikitere side : Okahu Block —In grass, 178 acres ; fencing, 205 chains m two paddocks , shelter-belt, 60 chains. Tobacco section —Cleared of gorse and broom, 49 acres. Fencing, 113 chains; shelter-belt, 51J chains (since 31st March, 1933). Waikato Party : Up to the 31st March, 1933, 127* acres of gorse, fern, and scrub were cleared, grubbed, and burnt, of which 35 acres were ploughed. The land was ring-fenced and divided into two paddocks but the fences were in disrepair. There was an area of 75 to 80 acres m pasture, but being rapidly covered with gorse. There were two cottages on the property and a shed. A topographical survey made in the spring of 1933 gives the following .figures of the position then reached : Area cleared, grubbed, and ploughed, 420 acres ; cleared only 45 acres ; m grass, 11 acres Fencing, including enclosing shelter-belts and plantations, m four paddocks and three reserves, 583 chains. ' Length of shelter-belts and plantations, 218£ chains. . Katene Huriwai's section : Total area, 133 acres, of which 9 acres m scrub were reserved for the source of water-supply and plantation, 2 acres were m bush, 38 acres in turnips, and 84 acres m grass, ī ram was installed which Jumped to a reservoir on the north side of the mam Rotorua-Whakatane Road There was one cottage and a cow-shed with yards and thirty heifers m milk. The fencing (including half boundary-fence) at the 31st March, 1933, comprised 212 The total fencing shown on the plan is 264 chains, but of this 52 chains were erected after the 31st March. 37 chains of drains were put in also after that date. Main Scheme (north side of highway): Total area cleared, grubbed, stumped, ploughed, and cultivated and sown in grass to 31st March, 1933, 485| acres. Water-supply from spring on Hunwai s section installed. Fencing 887 chains, including 178 chains double fencing for shelt, 3 r-brak< 3 s and nlantations Clearing stumping, and ploughing were proceeding on the 31st March, 1933. Three substantial cottages a' store-shed, and whare, also one cow-shed. Since the 31st March last 335 acres o? clearing, grabbing, and stumping have been completed, of which all but 20 acres were ploughed and sown 15U chains of additional fencing, two cottages, and three cow-sheds. Other fencing was in progress. Additional reading all falls into the current year's account Ruamata : The net expenditure to the 31st March, 1933, on this section as scheduled, was £19, moSl^hepermaienf oftheTikitere Scheme (south of the Ohau Channel) falls into the current year although forty-four dairy heifers and two bulls were charged at the 31st March last. The pastures on the scheme were made available to sheep, bullocks, and dairy stock held m the Bulk Stock Account to consolidate and clear the pastures and in the case of Okahu to control ragwort. (i ) Rotoiti —An area of 3,911| acres of bush land with a little open fern land was brought under this scheme at the end of May, 1932. During November a further 1,000 acres were added by purchase of a Native leasehold at £225. The latter area was practically abandoned by the lessee, but had on it rough pasture and fencing and the only source of water for working a large part of the area proposed to be developed. The area of old grass with fern was ascertained to be 522 acres The scheme was undertaken primarily as an unemployment relief measure for a section of the Rotoiti Natives, and provided work of the most useful kind for about fifty of them. P The Supervisor's report shows up to the 31st March, 1933 59 acres of bush felledl during the winter burnt, and sown ; 50 acres fern cleared, burnt, and part of the area disked, and the who e sown ' He reported that "it would be hard to find a better take of grass. The expenditure schedule gives as the mam items £902 for bushfellmg and clearing, and £627 for crass-seed and sowing. No unemployment subsidies came to credit during the year. ° (k) Maketu.—This scheme is in four sections, which may be dealt with separately as follows : (i) Maketu Farm: The net expenditure on this farm increased during the year 1932 33 from £7 439 to £9,997. The main items whicb accounted for this were : Three cottages and three cow-sheds and water-supply .. • • • • M 24 Farm equipment . - • • • • • • • • •' " Fencing .. • • • • • • ■ • ' * " " Bringing in additional land to pasture . • ■ • • • ■ • Deficiency in the Trading Account A summary supplied by the Department shows a gross expenditure to the 31st March, 1933, of SbATSS from all «*ri£4,l24, to which h.torfit cou.ributed £2,869 ; s.les o .took, meat, and skins, £509 ; and unemployment subsidies, £695. The butterfat return for 193., 33, including £149 outstanding at 31st March, 1933, was £1,758. including wer( f in opera tion on the Maketu Farm during the season. The area of the farm was increased by a purchase from King's Estate made by the Arawa Trust Board, which enabled the Supervisor of the Rotorua Group of schemes to winter a large number of weaner heifers for expenditure on this section was £1,484, of which £1,270 was for the purchase of land. The account was reduced by £459, cash repayments by the Maori settlers. Maize-growing is combined with dairying, and one unit, Te Rin Potaka, has been successful in both kinds of farming.
