Pursuant to section 44 of the Victoria College Act, 1905, the Council presents the following report for the year 1929 : — University Scholarships. A University Travelling Scholarship in Science was awarded to J. W. Harding, M.Sc., and a Travelling Scholarship in French was awarded to A. C. Keys, M.A. University Senior Scholarships were awarded as follows: Dorothy J. Ellison (Chemistry), E. J. Haughey (Law). Jacob Joseph Scholarships were awarded to Moira Dennehy, M.Sc., and C. W. Nash, LL.M. Moira Dennehy, M.Sc., and Minnie Forsyth, B.Sc., were awarded Sarah Anne Rhodes Travelling Scholarships, and Ivy Arthur, M.Sc., was awarded a Sarah Anne Rhodes Scholarship to enable her to take a course in home science at Otago University. A free passage to England was awarded to J. W. Harding, M.Sc. The Sir George Grey Scholarship was awarded to Dorothy J. Ellison ; E. B. Davies proximo accessit. Miss Ellison resigned the scholarship on gaining a University Senior Scholarship, and it was awarded to Mr. E. B. Davies. The Lissie Rathbone Scholarship was awarded to Beryl G. Price. The Sir Robert Stout Scholarship was awarded to Moira Dennehy, and the Lady Stout Bursary to Mildred Huggins. The Work of the Colleye. Changes in Staff. —The vacant Chair of English and New Zealand Law has now been filled by the appointment of Professor H. H. Cornish, M.A., LL.B., who retains the right of private practice as a barrister. Mr. J. R. Elliott, B.A. (Sydney), B.A. (Cambridge), has been appointed full-time lecturer in Classics and assistant to the Professor. Miss Thora Marwick, assistant to the Professor of Physics, who has been on leave in England for some years, has resigned her post. Miss Winifred Maskell has resigned her position as assistant to the Professor of History, and has been succeeded by Miss Muriel Ellis, M.A. (N.Z.). The Council regrets that ill health compelled Professor Adamson to apply for a year's leave of absence from the Chair of Law (Roman Law, Jurisprudence, &c.), and hopes that he will return with his health fully restored in 1931. In the meantime his duties are being distributed among other members of the Law Staff. Library. —The number of books entered as' accessions was on the 31st December, 1929, 23,036. During the year ending 31st December, 1929, 938 books were added to the library at a cost of £724. Of {hat sum £274 was spent on periodicals, including year-books, annual reports, digests, &c. This year volumes were received from the Carnegie Trust, from the New Zealand and other Governments, from learned societies, from the Wellington Branch of the League of Nations Union, and from the following private donors : Thirty-three from Sir Robert Stout, thirty from Mrs. A. East, twenty-three from Professor F. P. Wilson, and ten from Mr. H. D. Skinner. Weir Hostel.—The Council is gratified that the plans for the hostel on the Salamanca Road site have now been approved by the Minister, thus making it possible to proceed with the erection of the building. It is hoped that the architects will shortly be in a position to call for tenders.
