In pursuance of the provisions of tie Auckland University College Act, 1882, the Council has the honour to make the following report for the year 1929 : — Council.—There were three changes on the Council during the year. Mr. J. Marsden Caughey (appointed by the Governor-General) resigned owing to pressure of business, and was replaced by Mr. H. R. Jenkins. Mr. S. I. Crookes, appointed by the Auckland City Council, resigned on his retirement from the City Council, and his seat was taken by His Worship the Mayor, Mr. George Baildon. Professor Segar also retired, his place being taken by Professor Algie, as appointee of the Professorial Board. Staff. —Mr. W. T. G. Airey, M.A., took up the Lectureship in History, and Mr. D. Brown, Ph.D., replaced Mr. W. A. Macky in the Physics Department. Senior Scholarships were gained by the following : French, 11. J. Addis ; Latin, R. A. K. Mason (was not eligible to take up the scholarship) ; History, E. B. Stephens ; Applied Mathematics, ,T. C. Stewart ; Chemistry, T. R. Sherwood ; Geology, Rose Bonner. Public Lectures. —The course instituted by the Council in 1929 took the form of a Shakespeare symposium. These proved very popular, and the Council has decided to hold another course this winter. Workers' Educational Association.—During 1929 there were in the Auckland and Waikato districts forty-two classes, with a membership of 1,773, and an average attendance of 1,083 students. The financial position has remained about the same, but only at the cost of severely restricting activities. Special features have been the fourth summer school held at Hunua Falls, which drew an average attendance of 89 ; two one-day farm schools ; provision of lectures through the Box Scheme in thirteen centres, and about twenty educational talks broadcasted from IYA.
