1916. NEW ZEALAND.

EDUCATION RESERVES. AREA OF LAND SET APART FOR SECONDARY AND UNIVERSITY EDUCATION IN OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND, AND PARTICULARS RELATIVE TO SAME.

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the Bth September, 1916. Ordered, "That there be laid before this House a return showing—(l) The area of land set apart for higher aduoation in Otago and Southland ; (2) the area of land so reserved intended (a) for the endowment of individual schools and universities, and (6) for higher education generally in Otago and Southland ; (3) the area of this reserved land apportioned to (and when so apportioned) (a) the Dnnedin Bovs' and Girls' High Sohools, (6) the Southland (Invercargill) Boys' and Girls' High Schools, (c) the Waitaki (Oamaru) Boys' and Girls' High Sohools, and (d) the area (if any) remaining; (4) the baiis on which the reserved land was apportioned to eaoh of these sohools; and (5) the purpose to which the revenue derived from the remaining area (if any) is devoted."— (Mr. Anderson.)

The basis on which the laud was apportioned to the three High School Boards is not now known, the matter being entirely in the hands of the School Commissioners who made the apportionment. 4. The rental of the remaining lands is distributed among the High School Boards of the districts in proportion to the attendance at the various high schools. W. J.
