Extract from the Report op the Managers of the Temuka Technical School. The Board of Managers consisted of thirteen members as against ten for the previous year— namely, Messrs. M. McLeod (Chairman) and C. J. Bilton, representing the subscribers; J. W. Joynt and J. Bambridge, the Temuka Road Baord; A. Frew and H. Bell, the Temuka Borough Council; G. Thomson and D. Mclnnes, the South Canterbury Education Board; W. F. Evans, the Temuka Caledonian Society; T. Gunnion, the Temuka Bicycle Club; F. Sanders, the Temuka District High School Committee; M. H. McLeod, the Temuka branch.of the Farmers' Union; and Mr. G. Cartwright, the Temuka and Geraldine Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The usual monthly meetings were held, and the members attended well, paid close attention to the working of the school, and took a great interest in the pupils. The staff worked enthusiastically. The new instructor in commercial subjects, Mr. A. C. Buist, made satisfactory progress with his students, and Miss Jeannie Anderson, who had a large class in singing and voice-production, spared no pains to bring her pupils up to a good standard. The other members of the staff have been with us for years, and we have again to express our very best thanks to them as well as to Miss Anderson and Mr. Buist for their continued enthusiasm. At the instance of the Farmers' Union a sheep-shearing class was formed under Mr. John Collins, who proved himself a very capable and painstaking instructor. Mr. Samuel McCully very kindly supplied a shed and some requisites free of cost, gave the class of sheep suitable for learners, and provided food. The Managers desire to express their gratitude to both Mr. and Mrs. McCulh - for the trouble they took to help the class along, for it must be remembered that the shearing took longer than it would have done with experienced shearers. It is hoped next year to pay the students half-rates for the sheep they shear after, say, the first week. Although there were only seven classes this year and fewer students —a fact chiefly due to military training—yet they were more industrious, while their work was better and their attendance more regular than on any previous year. Since our last report the cookery-room has been completed, and is a great acquisition to the school. We have again to point to the generosity of Mr. John Mclnnes, Winchester, in the matter of supplying several bales of wool for the wool-classers free of charge; and we would also express our sincere thanks for the continued interest taken by those who supplied stud fleeces and by Mr. H. Bell, one of our Managers. A suitable wool-case has been erected for the safe keeping of the stud fleeces presented. At the end of the term Miss Anderson's class gave a concert. During the evening the certificates were presented by His Worship the Mayor, Colonel Hayhurst. Those present showed considerable interest in the proceedings, and expressed their pleasure at the work shown. We have much pleasure in drawing attention to the continued interest that our townspeople take in the classes, and this is proved by the substantial donations that are received not only from local bodies but from private individuals. The fees, too, are satisfactory, and the Managers wish to thank all for their liberal support. It will be seen from the balance-sheet that the association is in debt to the amount of £18 10s. Bd., which is due to the fact that at the 31st December no Government grants for the year 1913 had been received. When these are received the association will be found to be in about the same position as it was last year. M. McLeod, Chairman )» t> , ~, J. T. Smart, Director fof Board of Mana gers. Without a doubt the past session has been the most successful in the history of the association. The farmers of the district have now become thoroughly convinced of the great value of the work being done, and are giving the institution their whole-hearted support. The attendance at the classes has been remarkably good, and the enthusiasm shown by both pupils and teachers alike has been most gratifying. Thirty-nine students received instruction in wool-classing, the attendance being excellent. These facts speak volumes for the ability and enthusiasm of the instructor, Mr. H. F. Harte. There has been a very great demand on the part of sheepowners for the services of the students of this class as wool-classers in the various sheep-shearing sheds.
