1913. NEW ZEALAND.

DEFENCE DEPARTMENT: PARTICULARS RELATIVE TO CHAFF, OATS, AND BUTTER USED AT THE CAMBRIDGE CAMPS.

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 23rd September, 1913. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return relative to the chaff, oats, and butter used at the military camps held at Cambridge this year, showing separately—(l) The quantities ; (2) the place or plaoes where such were purchased ; (3) the prices paid; (4) the total amount of all oharges for transport to the camp; (5) whether tenders were called; (6) the localities in whioh such tenders were advertised; and (7) the place or places at which the Defence Department took delivery."—(Mr. Young.)

Charges for transport: £35 4s. 2d. (cost of transport for all supplies from station to camp-ground). Whether tenders were called for : No ; supplies bought in the cheapest market. Place at which Defence took delivery : Cambridge Station. (Camp was originally fixed to be held at Piako, but was changed at the last moment to Cambridge.) Note.—ln the case of supplies left over on the completion of camp, the Department had no difficulty in disposing of same at contract rates or on more favourable terms. H. O.
