Runciman, M.A. The Chairman of the Board of Governors to the Minister op Education. Sir, — Auckland University College, 9th May, 1904. In pursuance of section 25 of " The Auckland University College Act, 1882," the Council has the honour to make the following report: — 1. The number of persons who attended lectures in this College in 1903 was 1.76: Graduates, 9 (males, 7; females, 2) ; undergraduates, 94 (males, 61 ; females, 33) ; and non-matriculated 73 (males, 24; females, 49). There were also 12 students exempted from attendance at lectures ; of these, however, 5 attended lectures more or less. The total number of students was thus 183. 2. Council. —The Eev. J. H. Simmonds was reappoiuted a member of the Council by His Excellency the Governor in Council. The Hon. Joseph Augustus Tole, 8.A., LL.B., was re-elected a member of the Council by members of the General Assembly resident in the Provincial District of Auckland. Mr. Frederick Ehrenfried Baume was re-elected by the graduates of the University of New Zealand on the roll. 3. Senate. —-In accordance with the provisions of "The New Zealand University Act Amendment Act, 1902," the Council elected as members of the Senate of the University of New Zealand the Hon. Sir George Maurice O'Eorke and the Hon. Joseph Augustus Tole. Professor Brown was elected by the Professorial Board of this College, and Mr. F. E. Baume and Dr. McDowell were elected by the District Court of Convocation. 4. Professors and Lecturers. —The staff remained unaltered. 5. Beceipts and Expenditure. —Eeceipts in 1903, £4,580 os. 10d.; expenditure in 1903, £4,563 13s. 10d.: surplus, £16 7s. But the usefulness of the College could be largely increased if the funds at the disposal of the Council were larger in amount. 6. Endowments. —The income from endowments in 1903 was £377 os. 9d., and the expenditure upon them was £82 12s. sd. : net revenue, £294 Bs. 4d. It will thus be seen that the College is almost wholly dependent on the original grant of £4,000 per annum which was made two-and-twenty years ago. There is no prospect of any material increase of revenue from the endowments as the lands are remote from Auckland—at Taupiri, Eaglan, and Whakatane—and only fetch from 3d. to 6d. per acre when let. 7. Degrees and Honours.—-The degrees and honours gained at last November examinations of the New Zealand University are as follows : Masters of Arts, 8; Honours in Arts, 7 ; Honours in Science, 1; Senior Scholarships, 2 ; first examination, LL.B., 1; second examination, LL.B., 2;
