LUNATIC ASYLUMS (PARTICULARS RELATIVE TO ATTENDANTS EMPLOYED IN THE).
Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated the 24th July, 1903. Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing (1) the number of attendants employed in the asylums of the colony; (2) the average rate of pay received by each attendant, according to the grade in which they are employed, or any other allowance they may be entitled to; (3) the average length of service of each ; (4) the average number of working-hours per week, including holidays ; (5) the average number of working-hours per week, exclusive of holidays ; and (6) the amount of money due to them for compensation or for retiring-allowance."— (Mr. Witty.)
Lunacy Depaktment. 1. The number of attendants employed in the asylums of the colony : Male, 187 ; female, 143 : total, 330. 2. Average rate of pay received by each attendant, according to the grade in which they are employed, and any other allowances they may be entitled to : Male—head attendants £128, artisan attendants £114 Bs., charge attendants £97 lis. 5d., attendants £77 Is. Bd. ; female— matrons £95, charge attendants £55 15s. 6d, attendants £43 lis. Bd, cooks £57 18s., laundresses £55. In addition, all attendants receive board, lodging, and washing. 3. The average leugth of service of each : Male —head attendants 12 years 6 months, artisan attendants 8 years 8 months, charge attendants 10 years 1 month, attendants 2 years 8 months; female—Matrons 10 years 1 month, charge attendants 4 years 4 months, attendants 2 years 2 months, cooks 2 years 9 months, laundresses 4 years 5 months. 4. The average number of working-hours per week, including holidays : 89f. 5. The average number of working-hours per week, exclusive of holidays : 71|. 6. The amount of money due to them for compensation or for retiring allowance : Amount due for retiring allowances, £3,223 Bs. 4d.; amount to their credit in the hands of the Public Trustee, £4,495 Is.
