Public Works Department.—Railway Construction.—Return of Cost. 1. The mileage-cost (exclusive of additions to open lines ard rolling-stock) of all Government railways opened for traffic up to the 31st March, 1891 :— Cost per mile, £6,808; number of miles opened, 1,564. 2. The mileage-cost (exclusive of additions to open lines and rolling-stock) of all Government railways opened for traffic between the Ist April, 1891, and the 31st March, 1903 :— Cost per mile, £6,762 ; number of miles opened, 338. This return in each case is exclusive of the provincial and district railways taken over by the Government, and in item 2 is exclusive of the Midland Railway. H. J. H. Blow, Under-Secretary.
