Westland Electoeal District. —Eight Hon. Mr. Seddon's Eetuen of Election Expenses under " The Corrupt Practices Prevention Amendment Act, 1895." The Magistrate's Office, Wanganui, 3rd October, 1900. I have been unable to furnish statement of expenses of members owing to Mr. Mair, who succeeded me as Clerk of Courts, &c, at Hokitika, being unable to discover the return required. It was my practice to keep such returns in the safe, and I am much afraid that it must have worked into the fold of, or been picked up with, some other document, as Mr. Mair states that he has searched for it without success. I suppose I should have formally handed over the document to him when he took charge of other records which I had in custody, but, the return never having been referred to or inspected by any person, the fact that I had it slipped my memory.
