No. 51.—Petition of Hori Poipoi and 9 Others. Petitioners complain of the piece of land cut off for them from the Umumango No. 1 Block, and pray that the partitioning may be reconsidered. I am directed to report that, as this seems to be a matter for mutual adjustment between the European purchaser of the land in question and the petitioners, the Committee has no recommendation to make. 30th August, 1898. ■ ——

Petitioners pray for inquiry into the ownership of the Euatoki Block, Whakatane district, in order that certain persons, wrongfully left out, may be put into the title. I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for consideration. 31st August, 1898.

The Bast Coast Native Land Boaed Bill. The Native Affairs Committee, to whom was referred the above-mentioned Bill, has duly considered the same, and has directed me to report as follows : — That it is not advisable to create any special Board for the administration of the lands formerly held by the New Zealand Native Land Settlement Company (Limited), but instead (if such powers do not at present exist) a Bill be introduced granting power to trustees to dispose of such of the lands now held in trust by the Hon. James Carroll and Mr. Wi Pere, Ms.H.E., as will liquidate the debt now owing to the Bank of New Zealand; that, after paying such debt, all land remaining unsold be dealt with by special Act in such manner as may be recommended by the Validation Court after ascertaining the wishes of the beneficiaries; and with a view to the introduction of the necessary legislation the present Bill be not proceeded with. 16th September, 1898.
