I am directed to report that the Committee recommends that this petition be referred to the Government for inquiry as to whether the petitioners have any grounds for claiming compensation on account of their application for rehearing having been illegally dismissed. sth August, 1898. No. 258, 1897.—Petition of Tahaweba Wiapa and 5 Others. Petitionees allege that through not having received notice of the sitting of the Court which adjudicated upon Sections 38, 40, 41, and 43, Parish of Eangitaiki, near Whakatane, they did not obtain their rights, and now pray for a rehearing to enable them to do so. I am directed to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make with regard to this petition. sth August, 1898. [Tbanslation.]

No. 139. —Petition of Jane Maeia Phillips. Petitioneb alleges that, owing to herself and sister (Sophia, the well-known guide) being absent from the Taranaki District when the lands of their ancestors were adjudicated upon, they have been totally excluded therefrom, and are in consequence landless. She prays for relief. I am directed to report that the Committee considers this a special case for the favourable consideration of the Government, and recommends that legislation be passed this session to deal with this and similar cases in setting apart land to satisfy such claims. sth August, 1898.
