1895. NEW ZEALAND.

EUROPEANS CONVICTED FOR DRUNKENNESS, AND NEW-ZEALANDERS-BORN INCARCERATED FOR CRIME (RETURN OF).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated 9th July, 1895. Ordered, " That a return be laid before this House showing—(l) How many of the European population born in this colony have been convicted for drunkenness each year since 1887, also the number of convictions for this offence ; (2) how many of the New-Zealand-born Europeans are now incarcerated in the gaols of the colony, together with the total number of prisoners in the gaols, in order that this House and the country may know the proportion of New-Zealand-born Europeans to the total number of prisoners."—(Mr. Lawky.)

(1.) Number of Convictions for Drunkenness of Persons born in New Zealand, but of European descent; also, Total Number of Convictions for same Offence during each Year, 1887 to 1894.
