MR. VALENTINE, DAIRY EXPERT (COST OF ENGAGEMENT, AND EXPENSES OF).

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives dated 30th September, 1895. v Ordered, " That there be laid before this House a return showing all expenditure in connection with the engagement of Mr. Valentine, the Dairy Expert: the return to include cost of all cablegrams with the AgentOeneral in reference to his engagement; cost of passages paid for Mr. Valentine and any member of his family to New Zealand, vid Sweden, Norway, Denmark, or other countries in Europe, Canada, United States, and Australia; expenses for telegrams, cablegrams, hotels, &c. ; salary between date of engagement and termination thereof; also showing separately the actual number of days he was engaged at work within the colony and in London on New Zealand Government business.—(Mr. Duthie.)

Salaky, Allowance, etc., paid to C. E. Valentine. 1. Cost of all cablegrams with the Agent-General in reference to his engagement: Nil. 2. Cost of passages paid for Mr. Valentine and any member of his family to New Zealand, vid Sweden, Norway, Denmark, or other countries in Europe, Canada, United States, and Australia: Passages for Mr. Valentine and wife to New Zealand, vid America, £180 18s. ; passages for Mr. Valentine and wife from New Zealand to London, via Australia, £165 10s. : total, £346 Bs. 3. Expenses for telegrams, cablegrams, hotels, &c. : Expenses, London and on Continent and United States and Australia, including railway-fares, &c, £243 17s. Id.; expenses on passage, New Zealand to London, £67 lis. 6d.; expenses in England, £77 13s. Id. ; expenses in colony; including tra.velling-allowance, rail, and steamer fares, £118 4s. ; cables, £20 13s. lOd. ; typewriting, £35 2s. 7d.; clerical assistance, £3 : total, £566 2s. Id. 4. Salary between date of engagement and termination thereof : 14th October, 1893, to May, 1894, £221 2s. Id. ; June, 1894, to January, 1895. £300; allowance, special lectures in England, £21: total, £542 2s. Id. 5. Actual number of days that he was engaged at work within the colony: Left London 14th October, 1893. and arrived in colony 12th January, 1894 ; working in colony 12th January to 12th June, 1894 : 152 days. 6. Actual number of days that he was engaged in London on New Zealand Government business : Left colony on the 12th June, and reported himself to the Agent-General on the 13th August, 1894 ; left service on the 31st October ; three months' leave expired on the 31st January, 1895 : Eighty days.
