IMMIGRATION AND EMIGRATION (RETURN SHOWING THE EXCESS OF DEPARTURES OVER ARRIVALS: OCTOBER, 1887, TO JANUARY, 1891).

Laid on the Table by Leave of the House.

Excess of Departures over Arrivals October, 1887, to January 1891.

The above are the figures as per the immigration and emigration returns , but it was not until the census of April, 1891, was taken that the full excess of departures could be ascertained. During the time when steamers leaving this colony were overcrowded the Customs returns did not state the full number of departures, for obvious reasons. The census of April, 1891, showed that there had been a loss by excess of departures over arrivals since the previous census in March, 1886, of 15,946, so that it may fairly be said that about 4,500 persons were evidently omitted from the returns of departures between October, 1887, and January, 1891. If this number (4,500) be added to the excess of departures shown in the table above the total outgo stands as under : — October, 1887, to January, 1891, inclusive:— Excess of departures over arrivals, as per returns 9,798 Add number (estimated) omitted, as per census 4,500 Total outgo 14,298 B J yon Dadblszbn, Eegistrar-General's Office, Wellington, Bth June, 1893.
