A very gratifying proof of the growing importance of the University was afforded during the year by the receipt from Her Majesty's Commissioners for the Exhibition of 1851 of the offer of a scholarship of £150, tenable for two years, for original research in science, principally in its application to the industries of the colony. The Senate, in accepting this offer, has confined the competition for the scholarship to graduates with honours, or who are candidates for honours, in subjects of technical science, and has directed that the competition shall take place by October, 1891. At the annual session the Senate resolved to again record its earnest conviction that, in the interests of higher education in the colony, the establishment of a University College at Wellington is urgently needed ; and, further, that it is necessary that such College should be fully equipped, for the prosecution of University work on at least the same scale as has been provided by Parliament for the University College at Auckland. James Hectob, Chancellor.
