E.—ll.

NOTES BY THE SECRETARY FOR EDUCATION. 1. The preceding returns relate to land endowments only, no details having been obtained respecting moneys invested for the general maintenance of the secondary schools or for scholarships. 2. A very large amount of important information concerning the institutions for university and higher education and their endowments is given in the Eeports of the Eoyal Commission (1879 and 1880) on University and Higher Education. Detailed information respecting the reserves vested in the governing bodies of these institutions is contained in the appendix to the Commissioners' Interim Eeport, sections 11. and 111., pages 3-15. (See Appendices to Journals of the House of Bepresentatives, H.-l, 1879, and H.-l, 1880.) 3. The Canterbury College Board sold a large proportion of its reserves prior to the date of the abolition of the provinces; but information respecting the lands so disposed of is not covered by the order. No other public governing body seems to have sold reserves before the date mentioned. The following table, compiled from a parliamentary return (E.-11, 1883), shows the total area sold by the Canterbury College Board up to August, 1883, including the sales since the abolition of the provinces:—

4. The following answers were received in reply to requests for information concerning the endowment reserves vested in the governing bodies of Nelson College and Christ College and Grammar School, Canterbury : — From Nelson. —" lam directed by the Governors to inform you that no reserves were ever granted by way of endowment to the Nelson College by the Colonial Government of New Zealand or by the Provincial Government of Nelson, and that therefore the Governors have no return to make." From Christ's College and Grammar School, Canterbury. —" In reply to your circular of the 21st instant I am directed to state that the only endowment reserve in the Christ's College is as follows : 9 acres 3 roods, part of the Government Domain, Christchurch, granted by the Superintendent and Provincial Council of Canterbury, 24th February, 1857, to be held in trust by Christ's College as a site for the college buildings and for grounds attached thereto."

By Authority: Geoege Didsbuby, Government Printer, Wellington.—lBBs.
