NATIVE RESERVES (STATEMENT OF RECEIPTS AND DISBURSEMENTS OF THE COMMISSIONER OF), FOR THE PERIOD ENDED 31st DECEMBER, 1882.

Presented to both Houses of the General Assembly by Command of His Excellency.

The Public Trustee to the Hon. the Native Minister. Public Trust Office, Native Eeserve Branch, Sir,— Wellington, sth June, 1883. In compliance with clause 12 of " The Native Eeserves Act, 1882," I have the honour to forward herewith the accounts of the Commissioner of Native Eeserves under the repealed Acts. The accounts in question are rendered to the 31st December last, at which date, under the alteration made by the 15th clause of the Public Eevenues Act of last session, the financial year of the Public Trust Office closed. The accounts forwarded comprise,— 1. A return of the receipts and expenditure of the North Island Native Eeserve Fund, from the Ist April, 1880, to the 31st December, 1882. 2. A return of the receipts and expenditure of the Nelson Native Eeserve Fund, from the Ist April, 1882, to the 31st December, 1882. 3. A return of the receipts and expenditure of the Greymouth Native Eeserve Fund, from the Ist April, 1882, to the 31st December, 1882. The amount collected in the North Island during the period included in the return, inclusive of the amount of £874 9s. 2d. in hand on the Ist April, 1880, computed a total of £5,312 18s. lid., and the expenditure during the same time amounts to £4,249 Bs. 6d., leaving a balance of £1,063 10s. sd. to the credit of the fund. The receipts of the Nelson account from the Ist April, 1882, amount to £1,418 18s. sd. This sum added to the balance of £453 ss. lOd. to the credit of the fund at that date, together with sundry items forming a sum of £143 7s. 6d. credited to the Commissioner's account on adjusting the account in the Public Trust Office, aggregates a total of £2,015 lis. 9d., the expenditure during the same time amounting to £1,793 9s. 6d., less £51, leaving a balance to credit in the Public Trust Office of £222 2s. 3d. The aggregate income collected from all sources on account of the Greymouth Fund, augmented by the sum of £949 ss. Id to credit at the termination of the last financial year, amounts to £6,988 16s. 10d., further increased by a credit of £144 2s. 2d. (the difference between the Commissioner's account and the Public Trust Office), computing a total of £7,132 195., and the expenditure to £5,432 4s. 5d., less £167 lis. 6d., balance of imprests in hand, leaving an available surplus to the credit of the fund at the end of last year of £1,700 14s. 7d.
