1878. NEW ZEALAND. COUNTIES OF WAITAKI, VINCENT, AND LAKE (RETURN SHOWING EXPENDITURE IN, AND LAND REVENUE RECEIVED FROM, BY THE PROVINCE OF CANTERBURY).
Return to an Order of the Souse of Representatives, dated the 4th September, 1878. "That a return be laid before this House showing the amount expended by the Provincial Government of Canterbury, from the date of the settlement of that province to the date of Abolition and the inauguration of the county system, on roads, bridges, and other public works within that portion of the said province comprised within the Counties of Waitaki, Vincent, and Lake; also the amount of land revenue received by the Provincial Government of Canterbury during the same period."— (Mr. PyJcei)

This country is within the Mount Cook Eoad District. From the end of 1867 to the date of Abolition there was paid to the Timaru and Gladstone Board of Works one-fourth part of the proceeds of land sales within the Timaru and Gladstone District, of which the Mount Cook Road District is part, for distribution amongst the several Road Boards within the Timaru and Gladstone District. The proportion of the income above mentioned received within that period was £4,996, and the proportion thereof paid to the Timaru and Gladstone Board of Works, and which presumably went to the Mount Cook Road Board, was one-fourth of that sum, say, £1,249. How mucli of this amount, if any, was expended by the Road Board on roads, bridges, &c, within the localities above mentioned, can be ascertained only by reference to the Road Board records.
