RETURN SHOWING AMOUNT OF STAMPS UPON CONVEYANCES, LEASES, ETC.

Return to an Order of the House of Representatives, dated the 25th day of September, 1878. Ordered, " That there be laid upon the table a return showing (he amount of stamps upon conveyances, leases, and any other transactions affecting land during the year ending 1st July, 1878. Also, the amount of succession duties paid during the same period on landed estates."— (Son. Mr. Fox.)

Note.—The first column above represents the value of duty stamps affixed to instruments affecting transactions in land by the various Deputy Commissioners, but does not include the sales of parchment and paper impressed at the head office and distributed for sale at the local offices, as it is not possible to state whether such parchment and paper was used for transactions in land, or for other purposes. The second column represents the amount of fines paid on such instruments consequent on their not having been presented for stamping within the time allowed by law. The third column shows the amount of succession duty under i; The Stamp Duties Act, 1806;" but, although paid during the financial year ended 30th June, 1878, almost the whole of this duty has been due for some years. The fourth column contains the duty on the estates of deceased persons for the same financial year, and includes duty on personalty as well as realty, no distinction having been made in the returns furnished to this office by the Deputy Commissioners of Stamps.
