No. 1. The Governor of New Zealand to the Right Hon. the Secretary of State for the Colonies. (Telegram.) Wellington, New Zealand, 18th December, 1868. The rebels on the East Coast of this Island who perpetrated the massacre at Poverty Bay, have been defeated in two engagements with severe loss. It is now intended as soon as possible to concentrate the greater part of the Colonial Forces on the West Coast, with the object of putting down the rebellion in that quarter. The so-called Maori King is still quiet, and there has been no fresh outbreak hitherto in any part of the Colony. G. F. Bowen.

No. 2. The Governor of New Zealand to the Right Hon. the Secretary of State for the Colonies. (Telegram.) " New Zealand, 18th January, 1869. Ngatapa, the main stronghold of the rebels who perpetrated the Poverty Bay massacre, was captured by the Colonial Forces under Colonel Whitmore, on the sth January. Our loss did not exceed twentytwo (22) in killed and wounded; while that of the rebels, in killed, wounded, and prisoners, amounted to above two hundred (200). This success has produced a salutary effect. G. F. Bowen.
