CORRESPONDENCE RELATIVE TO THE COST OF THE ERECTION OF THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE AT AUCKLAND.

Superintendent's Office, Auckland, 22nd, May, 1856. St it, —Understanding that the Estimates of the General Government, are in course of preparation for transmission to the House of Representatives, I have the honor to request that you ■will make provision for the repayment to this Government of the sum of £750, which was placed •on the Provincial Estimates for the purpose of procuring sufficient furniture to enable his Excellency the Governor to occupy a portion of the new Government House, the sum of £500 voted by the General Assembly last Session having been insufficient for the purpose. I have also the honor to request that you will inform me whether the General Government •are prepared to take over the Government House, re-imbursing this Government for the cost thereof, namely £13,880. In the event of the General Government declining to do so, it will be necessary that provision be made on the Estimates to liquidate the rent of Government House, which will, in such case, become .payable to this Government, and will amount to the sum of £1,538 as per margin.* I have, &c.
