ORDERS OP REFERENCE Extracts from the Journals of the House of Representatives Wednesday, the 16th Day of July, 1947 Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of nine members, to consider all petitions from Ato L which may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House ; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House : the Committee to consist of Mr. Gerard, Mr. Hanan, Mr. Hudson, Mr. McAlpine, Mr. Mathison, Mr. Moohan, Mr. Shand, Mr. Walls, and the Mover." —(Hon. Mr. Parry.) Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1946 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session." —(Right Hon. Mr. Eraser.) Thursday, the 16th Day of October, 1947 Ordered, '' That the name of Mr. Mathison be discharged from the Public Petitions Ato L Committee, and that of Mr. Freer substituted therefor."—(Hon. Mr. Parry.) Tuesday, the 25th Day op November, 1947 Ordered, " That the Public Petitions A to L Committee have leave to sit during the present sitting of the House."—(Mr. Moohan.)

No. 21.—Petition of L. A. Adams, of 4 Hastings Parade, Devonport, Auckland Praying that New Zealand do not permit its sovereignty to be usurped by joining international organizations. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully-considered this petition, and has no recommendation to make. 1st August, 1947.
No. 2.—Petition of Elizabeth L. "Lamb, of 44 Waiohua Road, One Tree Hill, Auckland Praying for relief in respect of alleged victimization by police officers. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration. The Committee is of the opinion that the Police Department's procedure in compiling lists of previous convictions" should be investigated with a view to avoiding a recurrence. 6th August, 1947.
No. 73/1946. —Petition of C. W. G. Campbell, of Raumati Beach Praying for compensation for loss caused by the effects of war service. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that subclause (a) of section 16 of the petition praying that " three months' retiring-leave, valued at approximately one hundred and six pounds five shillings, be granted," be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 6 th August, 1947.
No. 6.—Petition of C. J. W. Lockie, of 404 Knight Street, Hastings Praying for payment of the balance of superannuation allegedly withheld. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and, as a question of Government policy is involved, it has no recommendation to make. 20th August, 1947.
No. 1.—Petition of S. G. Adams, of 21 St. Benedict's Street, Auckland Praying for inquiry into conduct of certain police officers, and for compensation. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and, as the petitioner has not exhausted his legal remedy, it has no recommendation to make. 20th August, 1947.
No. 26.—Petition of Sarah Allison Kibblewhite, of Christchurch Praying for relief in respect of the payment of succession duties. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 27th August, 1947.

No. 3.—Petition of G. H. R. Fraser, of 18 Simla Crescent, Khandallah, Wellington Praying for relief in respect of a property transaction. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration. 27th August, 1947.
No. 14.—Petition of S. R. Gawith, of Masterton Praying for relief in respect of estate and succession duties paid by him as executor and trustee of estate of Henry Hawson Smith, deceased. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and has no recommendation to make. 10th September, 1947.
No. 13.—Petition of W. Adams and 205 Others, of Auckland Praying for removal of the North Shore refuse-destructor from its present site. I have the honour to report that the Committee is of the opinion that the subjectmatter of the petition should be reported upon to the House by the Health Committee, and recommends that the petition be referred accordingly for consideration. 12th September, 1947.
No. 63.—Petition of Mildred B. Golding, of Auckland Praying for compensation for the death of her husband, allegedly due to the effects of injuries sustained while employed in the Railways Department. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. 16th October, 1947.
No. 49.—Petition of Haydee Idiens, of Christchurch Praying for compensation in respect of an affliction sustained while in enemy custody. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and has no recommendation to make. 23rd October, 1947.
No. 65.—Petition of M. 0. Barnett and Others, of Wellington Praying for the repeal of section 3 of the Bank of New Zealand Act, 1945 ; for the setting-up of a Tribunal to value the shares in the said bank which were acquired by the State ; and for compensation. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and has no recommendation to make. 23rd October, 1947.
No. 67.—Petition of H. S. Butcher and Others, of Stewart's Gully Praying for a full inquiry into conditions at Stewart's Gully. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and has no recommendation to make, because—(a) The petitioners have not exhausted their legal remedies. (b) Legal action is contemplated by the Labour Department. 13th November, 1947.

No. 116.—Petition of E. H. Andrews and Others, of Christchurch Praying for the declaration of Harewood Aerodrome as an overseas air terminal and Customs port for the South Island of New Zealand. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and recommends that it be referred to the Government for consideration. 27th November, 1947..
No. 103.—Petition of Dixon Spiers, Ltd., of Foxton Praying for compensation for loss of a sum of money while in the custody of the Post and Telegraph Department. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition, and the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. 27th November, 1947.
