ORDERS OF REFERENCE Extracts from the Jownals of the House of Representatives Wednesday, the 18tix Day of July, 1945 Ordered, " That a Select Committee be appointed, consisting of ten members, to consider all petitions from A to L which may be referred to it; to classify and prepare abstracts of such petitions in such form and manner as shall appear to it best suited to convey to this House all requisite information respecting their contents, and to report the same from time to time to this House; and to have power to report its opinions and observations thereon to this House: the Committee to consist of the Hon. Mr. Speaker, Mr. Algie, Mr. Connolly, Mr. Cotterill, Mr. Gerard, Mr. Hackett, Mr. Morton, Mr. Richards] Mr. Sheat, and the Mover."—(Hon. Mr. Nash, far Hon. Mr. Parry.) Ordered, " That all petitions not finally dealt with during the session of 1944 be again referred to the same Committees as they were referred to during the said session." —(Hon. Mr. Nash.) Tuesday, the 9th Day of October, 1945 Ordered, " That the name of Mr. Cotterill be discharged from the Public Petitions A to T, Committee, and that of Mr. Walls substituted therefor." —(Hon, Mr. Parry.)

REPORTS No. 122/1944. —Petition of Nettie M. Anderson, of Dunedin Praying that she be granted a war widow's pension. 1 have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for favourable consideration. sth September, 1945.
No. 15.—Petition of T. P. Long, of Hastings Praying for compensation on account of alleged miscarriage of justice. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. sth September, 1945.
No. I.—Petition of C. J. W. Lockie, of Hastings Praying for the repeal of section 33 (2) of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 1927. I have the honour to report that the Committee considers the petitioner has a grievance which should be met. and that a suitable amendment of section 33 (2) of the Public Service Superannuation Act, 1927, would enable a remedy to be applied; but, as a question of Government policy may be involved, the Committee recommends that the petition be referred to the Government: for consideration. 14th September, 1945.
No. 83/1944. —Petition of T. Gray, of "Wellington Praying for inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the alleged loss of investment moneys. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 26th September, 1945.
No. 22.—Petition of Dominion Settlement and Population Association, Inc., of Wellington Praying for inquiry into ways and means of increasing the population of the Dominion ~ 1 have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has heard evidence on, and has carefully considered, this petition, and that, in so far as the petitioners ask for the setting-up of a special Select Committee to inquire into and report upon the several _matters referred to therein, this Committee is of the opinion that the prayer of the petitioners be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration 9th October, 1945.
No. 64/1944. —Petition of Hon. W. E. Barnard, of Tauranga Praying that newspapers publishing criticism of the actions of citizens be required to publish a reply if submitted from the persons directly affected. I have the honour to report that the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so 10th October, 1945.
No. 7.—Petition of E. C. Bathurst and 1,093 Others, of Ashburton 1 raying for the retention of the Ashburton Post-office clock-tower in its present position. 1 have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 17th October, 1945.
No. 48.—Petition of L. E. Aldrich and 99 Others, of Hawera Praying for a Magisterial inquiry into the administration of the South Taranaki Electricpower Board. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make 18th October, 1945.

No. 100/1944. —Petition of N. H. Jackson, of Wellington Praying that he be granted some allowance, payment, or pension during his period of disability. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration. 25th October, 1945.
No. 12.—Petition of H. E. Gillum, of Christchurch Praying for compensation on account of injuries sustained allegedly owing to the negligence of the Railways Department. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 25th October, 1945.
No. 18.—Petition of S. A. Dumpleton, of Christchurch Praying that he be granted a war pension. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 25th October, 1945.
No. 42.—Petition of F. S. Bowen, of Muriwai Praying that a Committee of the House investigate the cause of the debts claimed by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co., Ltd., over his stock during the period from 1921 to 1945. I have the honour to report that the Public Petitions A to L Committee has carefully considered this petition and has no recommendation to make. 26th October, 1945.
No. 55/1944. —Petition of D. L. Irwin, of Wellington Praying for a remission of succession duty. I have the honour to report that the Committee has no recommendation to make. 6th November, 1945.
No. 109/1944. —Petition of D. Gallagher, of Kirwee, Christchurch Praying for compensation for loss allegedly sustained arising out of the impressment of hip motor-truck. I have the honour to report that in the opinion of the Committee the petition should be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration; the Committee is also of the opinion that £50 would be a fair compensation. No. 81. —Petition of C. H. Hogg, of Wellington Praying that he lie granlcd a lump sum to compensate him for lost employment and earnings. No. 49/1942. —Petition of R. F. Hannan, of Waiheke Island Praying for the variation of a Supreme Court order. I have the honour to report that the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so. sth December, 1945.

Goulding and 5 Others, of "Wellington Praying for the appointment of a Royal Commission to investigate and report 011 certain matters affecting the appointment and tenure of office of Stipendiary Magistrates. J. have the honour to report that the member presenting the petition having requested permission to withdraw it, the Committee recommends that he be allowed to do so sth December, 1945.
No. 121/1944. —Petition of M. H. Brown, of Christchurch Praying for a review of his war pension. I have the honour to report that, the Committee has no recommendation to make. A. S. Richards, Chairman. sth December, 1945.
Special Report This Committee desires to place on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered by its Chairman, Mr. A. S. Richards, whose ability, courtesy, and tact have contributed largely to the smooth and successful working of the Committee It was resolved that this resolution be recorded in the minutes of the Committee and reported to the House.
