EARLY TRANSFER LIKELY
MENTAL PATIENTS AT CHATEAU (By Telegraph.—Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday Although a decision has not yet been reached, it is likely that the mental hospital at Chateau Tongariro will be closed down soon and its patients transferred to the Raventhorpe home, near Auckland. This was disclosed by the DirectorGeneral of Mental Hospitals, Dr. T. G. Gray. Dr Gray said the removal of patients from the Chateau was being considered and would be effected at the earliest possible moment. The authorities never considered the Chateau to be suitable for a permanent mental hospital. Because of the damage done to the Porirua mental hospital in the 1942 earthquake, however, it had been necessary to use it lor emergency accommodation. Since then it had always been intended to remove the patients as soon as suitable alternative accommodation was available. The Chateau has been used as a mental hospital for female patients since October, 1942.
