TONIGHT’S PROGRAMMES

REGENT THEATRE One of the year's most exciting melodramas, " The Picture of Dorian Gray," will be screened today. The story is of an ingenious roung man. who falling under evil influences is constrained to pray that only his portrait may show the signs of age and that he himself may enjoy perpetual youth. His prayer is answered with macabie results. An outstanding M.G.M. supporting programme includes " Along a Cactus Trail," one of the brilliant Fitzpatrick travelogues, the cartoon " Million Dollar Cat,” and the latest airmail news. CIVIC THEATRE "Desperate Journey," Warner Bros.’ stirring new success, stars Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan. The picture tells the story of how an R.A.F. bomber crew, forced down in the heart of Nazi-land, gunned, dynamited, fought their way to safety and England. The only important feminine role in the film is placed by Nancy Coleman, who scored such a success in "Kings Row” and "The Gay Sisters." She is cast as a member of the German Underground who comes to the aid of the embattled Englishmen. STATE THEATRE A film which moves from the widely varied atmosphere of Manchester’s Magnolia Street t<» Berlin's pre-war night life, Louis Golding’s "Mr Emmanuel " presents us with something of everything—drama, simple touches of human comedy, gay scenes of cabaret and receptions—music. John Loder, veteran actor, makes his debut as a sword dancer in Edward SmaM’s comedy hit. "Abroad With Two Yanks." Loder performed his dance before the camera with William Bendix, Dennis O’Keefe and Helen Walker as amused spectators. ROXY THEATRE Hypnotism that according to one English psychologist has been used not only ingeniously but in a way that closely parallels scientific methods forms an important part of the plot of Universal's technicolour spectacle. “ The Climax." As the mad doctor Boris Karloff gives a spine-tingling performance, while Susannah Foster (of " Phantom of the Opera”) is attractive as a young operatic singer. "Riding High" stars Dorothy Lamour, Dick Powell and Victor Mature. THE ROYAL “ The Crime Doctor's Courage,” fourth in Columbia Pictures’ screen adaptations ox the famous radio programme, “ Crime Doctor " i= the week-end attraction at the Royal. Warner Baxter is starred as Dr. Ordwa.v. the eminent psychologist and psychoanalyst. Others featured in the cast are Hillary Brooke, Jerome Cowan, Robert Scott, Stephen Crane, Lloyd Corrigan. Emory Parnell. Anthony Caruso and Lupita Tovrr. Louise Erickson, charming young si lr of the radio, comes to the screen in Columbia Pictures' story of a young crooner.
