SNEAK RAID ATTEMPTED ITALIAN ACT REVEALED (Received Aug. 9, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 8 The French Naval Ministry disclosed that Italian bombers attempted a sneak raid on the South of France three days before Mussolini declared war in 1940. Radar detected the approach of the raiders who evidently intended to attack the French fleet at Toulon, after which French anti-aircraft guns broke up and turned back the Italian formation, thus averting a disaster comparable with Pearl Harbour. BELGIAN CHAMBER VOTE OF CONFIDENCE (Received Aug. 9, 2.15 p.m.) BRUSSELS, Aug. 8 The Chamber of Deputies after two days’ debate passed a vote of confidence in M. Van Acker’s reconstituted Government. RACE WITH GERMANY BOMBING OF FACTORY (Received Aug. 9, 1 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 8 Brigadier-General Thomas Farrell, aide to Major-General Leslie Groves, who was in charge of the atomic bomb development, said British and American scientists thought for a while that they were racing against time with the Germans, who were known to have begun work on a similar bomb. Allied bombs last March destroyed a laboratory at Oranienburg where German scientists were working on the atomic bomb. When they heard about the laboratory, General Marshall and General Arnold sent a courier from Washington with oral orders to General Spaatz to destroy the building.
