Airman Promoted Flying-Officer B. D. J. Welch has been promoted to the rank of flightlieutenant, according to advice received by his parents, Mr and Mrs D. R. Welch, of Taupiri. Power Position Improves Increasing .hours of daylight and milder weather have had a beneficial effect on the power supply position, said Mr S. L. Vale, chairman of the Hamilton Save Electricity Committee today. With the approach of spring troubles would be over for this year at least, he added. “Bites for Britain” The “Bites for Britain” campaign in the Waikato has only three days to run. The campaign closes on August 5, the end of the current ration period. Reports from the organisers indicate that there is a steady flow of contributions among the 66 grocers and a number of butchers who are acting as collecting agents. Plans for Rose Show The Waikato Rose Society, at the bi-monthly meeting last night, authorised the executive to enlarge the schedule for the annual show and to increase the prize money. The president, Mr H. Bennett, said the executive would probably allot the extra classes to the novice and intermediate sections. Much of the success of the coming show, he said, would depend upon securing suitable premises, where the public could be attracted by a glorious display of roses. Peachgrrove Hall The future of the Peachgrove Road recreation hall was discifssed at a meeting of the Claudelands East Citizens and Ratepayers’ Association last night. The chairman, Mr S. W. Mr L. iLuxton described efforts to enlist the support of other interested bodies to ensure that the centre was retained for the use of the community. Mr R. C. Rhodes was elected to a vacancy on the executive of the association. Plays At St. Peter’s School Another successful dramatic performance in aid of Red Cross funds was given on Saturday evening by the pupils of St. Peter’s School, Cambridge. A programme of three new plays was presented, and the excellence of the staging and commendably high standard of acting were evidence of conscientious work by the staff and boys alike since the initial venture of the term a fortnight previously. The plays were:— “Rumpelstiltskin” (Mary Lascelles), by the Lower School; “The Maid of Burgos” (Freda Collins), by Middle School II; and “The Knave of Hearts” (Louise Saunders), by Upper School I. There was a large attendance of parents and friends, the well equipped theatre in the school gymnasium being almost completely filled. Rehabilitation Statistics Of the men and women of the services recorded by the Rehabilitation Department as having returned to civil life, just less than one-third have returned to their pre-service employment. A little more than onequarter have found new employment for themselves, while just less than a quarter have been placed by the Rehabilitation Department. These figures are quoted in a statement covering the department’s monthly statistical review, which says that 49,273 have been recorded with the department as returned from service overseas and a further 29,112 as discharged from home service. Of the grand total of 78,335, at the end of June, 15,087 had for various reasons not been discharged. During June 2221 were recorded as having returned from overseas and 577 as having been discharged from service in New Zealand.
