STOCK MARKET

BEEF IMPROVES SLIGHTLY LIGHTER SUPPLIES ON OFFER Any alteration in stock quotations during the week % has usually been in j favour of vendors and supplies on the whole have been lighter than last week. The dairy herds are reported to be wintering well, and the increasing number of bobby calves to be seen indicates that the new dairying ! season has commenced in real earn- j est. Beef has been selling well with a | slight improvement in values at some centres. There was a good quality entry of bullocks at the Te Awamutu sale-, prime Polled Angus bullocks realising from £l6 to £l7, entries from Mr G. O. Bayly making the latter figure. Medium bullocks at this sale changed bands from £l4 7s i 6d to £ls 10s, while fat Polled Angus | cows and heifers were auctioned I from £lO to £l3. A slight firming 1 [ tendency was apparent for all classes i at the last Frankton sale when heavy | I bullocks were quoted from £l6 15s to : £lB, last year. Pig Entries Limited [ Fat pig entries have continued to be limited and recent improved i values have been maintained with--1 out difficulty. Light to medium baconers have been selling from £4 2s to £4 16s and porkers from £2 j 10s to £4. Breeding sows have not j been quite in the same keen re- : quest at some sales and prices offered at the annual combined breeders’ fair at Claudelands were sometimes | not up to vendors’ expectations, j Competition was inclined to drag for j some lines of pedigrees but competition kept up well on grade sows. j Prices have been keen at recent \ dairy clearing sales but the demand was slightly weaker for heifers at this week’s dairy sale at Frankton, medium quality Jersey heifers selling from £ll 10s to £l2. Cows at the same sale, however, sold firmly, a line of Friesian cows from Mr A. A. Holmes, of Te Rapa, making to £l7 5s and averaging £l4 10s. Other early calving Jersey cows sold from £l2 to £l4 10s. MORRINSVILLE VALUES The yarding of fat sheep at Morrinsvilie yesterday comprised mostly fat lambs for which there was keen competition at prices on a par with recent values. A good entry of beef was freely competed I for with values firmer. Boner and store cows were yarded in smaller numbers but firm values were maintained. There was a good entry of empty heifers and these were keenly sought at higher values. A full yarding of dairy cattle included the advertised herd. This came forward in good condition to sell readily to a full bench of buyers and realised the satisfactory average of £l4 3. Good quality well-grown heifers, close to profit, also met a keen demand at recent quotations, but poor and inferior sorts were harder to quit. The yarding of pigs was on a par with last week’s values. Choppers, baconers and porkers were in keen demand, prices remaining firm at recent quotations. Breeding sows and store pigs were also keenly sought after, a good sale resulting.
