LIMB INFECTIONS
ARTERIAL INJECTION NEW YORK, July 12 The Journal of the American Medical Association reports the successful treatment of serious limb infections by the administration of penicillin directly into the arteries. Three New York doctors are said to believe that many lives and limbs could be saved by using the arterial route. The findings assume added importance because 70 per cent of war casualties are associated with wounds in extremities.
The advantage of arterial injection lies in the fact that the drug is carried by the main blood stream immediately toward the limb and the infected tissues and the blood contains a higher concentration of penicillin than when administered by mouth, vein and muscle injections. Doctors who tried the arterial method in 24 cases of severe infection found th£t a single injection was usually sufficient for definite improvement or a cure where there was no pus formation or dead tissue. They said the relief from pain was striking and many patients were saved from major amputations.
