INDIA’S FUTURE
CONFERENCE TO CLOSE MOSLEM LEAGUE’S CLAIM (Unit«d Pr.a. Aun.—El.s. T.l. Copyright) (Received July 13, 12.15 pjn.) LONDON, July 12 The effort to form a new central Government by agreement between the main parties has unfortunately failed, says the Times Simla correspondent. The political leaders will assemble at the Vice-Regal lodge on Saturday, when it Is expected that Lord Wavell will make a statement winding up the conference, which broke down because the Moslem League President, Mr Jlnnah, laid claim to all five Moslem seats for the Moslem League. The Viceroy was prepared to concede him four, reserving one for an Independent Moslem. There will be great • disappointment in nationalist India at the failure to agree, particularly in view of the Congress Party’s unusually conciliatory attitude. The Moslem League for once in a while will have taken responsibility in the public eye for holding up India’s political progress, although the British will come in for a good deal of nationalist criticism if their offer is not made available to those parties willing to co-operate. The root of the trouble is, of course, the Hindu-Moslem controversy over India’s future—whether when the British depart it shall be one or two Indias. Speaking for the Indian Princes, a representative said they shared the general desire of the country that a settlement should be reached. They would welcome an interim national Government for British India and would co-operate with it in all matters concerning the whole of India.
