MINIATURE ELECTION

FURTHER POLLING TODAY (Received July 13, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 12 A miniature general election takes place today (Thursday), in 22 constituencies in North England and South Scotland, where polling was postponed because of the holidays.

There has been some keen campaigning, accentuated by the presence of well-known political figures of all parties. Two Ministers of the “Caretaker” Government are involved in the poll—Sir Donald Somfervell, the Home Secretary, who is Conservative candidate for Crewe, and Mr Ernest Brown, Minister of Aircraft Production, who is Liberal National candidate for Leith. There will still be two constituencies remaining to vote after Thursday—Nelson and Colne. Polling there will be on July 19, this date being fixed on account of the death of the Labour candidate, Mr Walter Windsor, invalidating the other nominations.
