“GESTAPO” INCIDENT
GOVERNMENT MEMBER'S REPLY WELLINGTON, Friday Speaking in the Address-in-Reply debate in the House of Representatives last night Mr P. Carr (Government —Auckland West) said the member for Hauraki (Mr A. S. Sutherland) had talked about the Gestapo, but the Gestapo was here long before the member for Hauraki saw him. Mr Sutherland: Yes. He had a bit of age on. Mr Carr said that during the depression snoopers were going into the homes of workers on relief to see if they had Government interjections: A canary; a wireless. Mr Carr said those snoopers wanted to find out if relief workers had a radio or a piano. They snooped around in the shed to see if there was an old car or motor-cycle. That sort of thing went on under the Government to which the member for Hauraki gave his support. Mr Sutherland: It is still going on.
