PETROL ALLOWANCE
EARLY INCREASE EXPECTED WELLINGTON, Thursday An announcement by the Government before the end of the month of an increased petrol allowance for private motorists is considered likily in official quarters. The Minister of Supply, Mr Sullivan, when asked to comment on the prospect of an increased ration, said: “New Zealand had asked the overseas authorities for the same ration as the amount supplied to motorists in Britain and America. “We have had some interim answers, but not the final answer,” he added. “The interim answers are encouraging and hopeful. When we have the final decision from Britain and America, then the public will be told.” It is understood that the number of tankers available is the crux to the future petrol position in New Zealand. Before the Government can go ahead freely and release the stocks of petrol now held in New Zealand, it must be sure that sufficient tankers will be available to replenish these stocks and maintain any increased allowance that may be possible. The basic petrol rations in Britain are:—Cars up to nine horse-power, four gallons a month; cars of 10 to 13 horsepower, five gallons; cars of 14 to 19 horse-power, six gallons; cars of 20 horse-power and over, seven gallons; motor-cycles, two or three gallons a month according to cylinder capacity.
