HOUSING PROGRESS
QUESTIONS BY COUNCILLORS No word had been received from the Loans Board and until this was forthcoming the work could not begin, said the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night when Mr Arthur Fow inquired regarding progress with the erection of 40 flats which had been decided upon some time ago. Regarding six houses which were to be built from the funds of the electricity and waterworks account the chairman of the housing committee, Mr D. C. Street, said that the firm supplying the houses had not yet been able to make a start. The lack of framing timber was delaying operations. The inadequate supply of roofing was also causing concern. Mr Caro remarked that the naval base at Devonport had priority in securing building materials. It had been suggested that the building controller should be approached with a view to facilitating the supply of roofing. Answering Mr E. G. Scrimshaw, who said there were 268 ex-soldiers awaiting State houses in Hamilton, Mr Street said there had been no progress in the erection of 50 houses decided upon previously. The matter was under review by the housing committee, which would consider >it at its next meeting.
