GAS POSITION
RESTRICTIONS POSSIBLE WARNING TO CONSUMERS A warning that if there was not still greater co-operation from the public there was a very grave danger of restrictions being introduced was issued by Mr A. J. Denz, chairman of the gas committee, at a meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council last night. “We have had the assistance of the public in the past,” said Mr Denz. “However, I am afraid there is a section of the community not assisting at all. We will be very fortunate if we get through July without restrictions. Consumers must shut off heaters whenever possible.” Mr Denz moved that an application for permission to instal a gas heater be declined in the terms of previous applications, pointing out that at the present time it was impossible to give approval. It was stated that the applicant was a semi-invalid woman. The meeting carried Mr Denz’s resolution. Mr Baird’s Report The past month had been an extremely difficult one at the gas works, the superintending engineer, Mr J. R. Baird, told members. The consumption of ghs had been higher than in any former period. “The supply has been kept going by stopping the sale of coke and by manufacturing gas from coke and oil,” said Mr Baird. “Emergency reserves combined with the loyal cooperation of the gas works staff have so far kept the consumers free from the inconveniences that other centres have suffered.” There were certain defects in the purifiers but until war conditions permitted the necessary materials to come to hand the staff could only continue to do the best it could with the present available equipment.
