SAVING POWER
VALUE OF COMMITTEE QUESTIONED BY MAYOR “Why did the business people form the committee?” asked the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, during a discussion by members of the Hamilton Borough Council last night concerning a request by the Save Electricity Committee'for a grant of £3O in the interests of furthering its campaign. “There was one reason only—for themselves,” the Mayor continued. “They were not prepared to put in £1 each and conduct the campaign. They wanted the council to pay for them. They should have collected among themselves. It is all right this ‘sob-stuff’ about what they have done. They have done it for the business people and not for the Hamilton Borough Council. They have helped but have helped only themselves. They wanted light in the main street.” Mr Caro moved that the council agree to pay £5 toward advertising. He recalled that the council had previously made a grant of £SO. Amendment Carried An amendment was moved by Mr R. Braithwaite and seconded by Mr Arthur Fow to the effect that the question be referred to the electricity committee of the council with power to act. . The amendment was carried by 7 votes to 5. Messrs Fow, Braithwaite, A. J. Denz and M. M. Shaw spoke in favour of giving a grant to the committee. They considered that the to\yn had benefited greatly through its efforts toward the elimination of the cut-out periods. The chairman of the electricity committee, Mr T. Parker, commented that he had thought the council very generous in making the original grant of £SO. He thought the committee had worked very hard. He favoured a further grant. The campaign had resulted in very definite savings being effected, said the electrical engineer, Mr I. Webster.
